Milliken Announces Carpet Care Program That Enhances Indoor Air Quality And Reduces Dust Mite Allergens

Milliken Carpet, Commercial Markets, a major manufacturer of modular carpets, has released an independent environmental study showing that the Millicare Environmental Services (MES) maintenance system actually improves the indoor air quality associated with dirty carpets.

The MES system, which uses the Capture carpet dry cleaner, was tested by Air Quality Sciences, an independent environmental firm that also conducts the emission testing for the Indoor Air Quality program of the Carpet & Rug Institute and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The MES Capture dry cleaning product reduces three types of pollutants that cause indoor air pollution: 1) Volatile organic compounds (chemical vapors) were reduced by 75 percent; 2) airborne particulates (debris of dust and dirt) were reduced by 88 percent; and dust mite allergens (dust mite body parts and fecal matter) were reduced by 89 percent.

Analysis of the dust mite allergens was conducted by the School of Dermatology, Allergy and Clinical Immunology at John Hopkins University. Cleaning carpets with the Capture product was found to reduce dust mite allergens by a factor of 16 – from “high” to “low” risk, a significant reduction for allergy sufferers. More than 40 million Americans suffer from allergies. While dust mite allergens are minute in size (10 can fit on the period at the end of this sentence), they are the most common source of allergies in the indoor environment.
